Prompt: What area of your life do you tend to enjoy to excess instead of moderation?
Tea. Food. Cussing. Shopping. Music… Those would be the top 5. Shall I expand? Even if you said “no”, you know I’m going to. I mean, you are not new here.
My tea habit began almost 20 years ago. It was small, one hot cuppa, maybe once a day. Then about 13 to 15 years ago it was always at least once a day, then twice. I can’t drink coffee without it messing my belly up, so I switched to tea. I worked in a medical office, so there was coffee always on the burner. It was a fast paced environment when we had clinic, so many times, I would make my cuppa, and maybe get 1/2 of it down before I had to run off. Then I discovered those little hot plates that keep your cuppa warm. They don’t really work, but the placebo effect is a cool thing. I got a little pot and put the pot on the plate and drank it until it was empty, even though it was cold.
But now that I work at home, I have a 2 pot a day habit. Not little pots, these must be 40 ouncers… I go though approx 8 bags worth of tea a day, 2 pots, 2-4 oz of sugar and probably 1/4 to 1/2 cup of half and half a day. To say it’s excessive is an understatement. It could be 110 degrees with 98% humidity outside and I’ll still have my cuppa(s). If using tea bags, I go though a box of 80 in about a week. We have all made peace with that.
I am a bit (okay, a lot) overweight. There are many reasons for this, but I’m not going to get into them right now. I will say that I have a bad sugar habit (it’s harder to quit sugar than it was to quit smoking, seriously), and I’ve never met a dessert I didn’t like.
I also cuss a lot. Usually when I am shopping. Or driving. Or painting… hum. I just cuss a lot. Not around young kids or people who don’t know me. That’s reserved for after final judgement has been passed on me. If you can’t figure out how to work that 4-letter word into your vocab? I can help with that. At least my boys know how and which word to use in the correct circumstance. That’s me trying to spin a negative into a positive. That’s hard to do. Especially since my husband is a good man and doesn’t cuss around any child, and most adults. I’ve heard it, as have a few other select people, but he’s a much better person that I will ever be.
Music? Oh yes, it’s playing at all times. Even when I’m not in the room. I have to have music on. I can listen to just about anything except Country, Rap (some Hip Hop), and most Metal (especially Speed Metal). I’m on a Kate Bush kick right now and can’t seem to get enough of her. If you have not heard “Before the Dawn”, you must. It’s the “ninth wave” on steroids. It’s a live recording from her concert from November 2016. It’s phenomenal. There are two songs that you can play at any time that are guaranteed to make me cry: Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” and Kate Bush’s “Dream of Sheep“. They are amazing songs by amazing women who are incredible artists.
